Migraine Mama Brain is now The Wounded Comforter! I appreciate your patience as I work to change over to the new name. The site itself is in the final stages of the building process. I’m excited to share with you all the things I’ve learned over the last 13 years since my diagnosis. I’m not cured (there isn’t a cure for migraine disease at the time of this writing), but I currently have a lot of my life back. That’s a miracle!
The top triggers for me are hormones and weather, and a few other things. I had daily, severe migraine attacks for years. By the grace of God, the migraine attacks are down from days and weeks to work shifts (some overtime, some part-time). New treatments became available in 2018. It took some trial and error, but I think I’ve hit upon the most effective combination.
In 2017, I also started a Clean(er) Living lifestyle. My husband and I changed our diet to more organic and whole foods. I cut out trigger foods including all forms of soy, white and yellow onions, almonds, and avocado (yes avocado, it’s one of the saddest things in my life). I learned the hidden names of soy and read labels so often that I can now quickly scan them. It wasn’t easy, but I adjusted (actually we all did), and little by little I began to cut down on migraine days.
Along with our diet, we slowly switched our household cleaners, laundry detergent, and skin care products. We stopped using fabric softener sheets in favor of wool dryer balls. I got rid of all my toxic candles and perfume. I started taking quality supplements. We use fluoride-free toothpaste. Our water is filtered. Scents and ingredients became really important to me. I began a side quest to find aluminum-free deodorant (which has only recently been completed). Basically, the new rule was and is, if it doesn’t trigger or worsen a migraine, it’s fair game. I call it the migraine-mitigating lifestyle, and I want to share what I’ve found with you.
All migraine attacks and reactions are different from person to person, and may even be different for each individual migraine. A treatment that works for one person may have the opposite result for another person (hence the reason migraine is so difficult to treat without a current cure). Not everything I post will work for everyone, but I hope it’ll help someone. You can read more details about that in my boring but totally necessary disclosure.
At some point, I may have affiliate links in my posts. If you make a purchase using these links, I’ll receive a small commission that’ll help with the costs associated to run this blog. It doesn’t cost you any extra money to buy a product or service through one of my affiliate links, and I appreciate your support. Please note I only share products I personally used and love and that I’d gladly talk about for free. That means they work and contribute to the migraine-mitigating lifestyle (and a cleaner lifestyle in general). They range from completely organic to naturally-based to non-toxic.
I’m still on this journey as I continue the search for answers to keep reducing the frequency and severity of the migraine attacks. The goal/dream when you’re chronic is 1-2 tolerable migraine attacks per week. The Wounded Comforter shares my experiences with what I’ve learned along the way as I continue to live my (blessed) life with migraine and explore treatment and lifestyle options.
